LANDSCAPE

SHORT LIST

Statement

Imaginary Landscape

When scenery is hazy or obscured by thick fog, scenery is created within every viewer through the power of imagination, mingling things that exist yet cannot be seen with things that appear to exist yet do not. Many people find fog-enshrouded scenes beautiful because people are essentially creatures that seek out beauty.

Jury selection

In Masato Tanaka’s photographs, which are very peaceful and beautiful, we see objects slowly emerging from the mist. It returns you to a sense of a slower time, or of travel by boat, where objects have to be allowed to unveil themselves in their own time.
