RUNNER-UP

Yellow Page – Uwajima –

My fascination with the universal language of color led me to yellow—a hue that travels across cultures, quietly carrying shared meaning. I was drawn to the simple fact that in many countries, telephone directories are called Yellow Pages and printed on yellow paper. Curious, I searched “yellow” within my online photo archive, Google Photos. The images that the algorithm identified as yellow included many I would never have imagined as such. I gathered these unexpected results into a photobook, letting the algorithm’s logic shape the work.

What lies beyond human foresight often emerges within systems that seem purely rational, like artificial intelligence. The color I perceive as “yellow” may differ not only from Google’s but also from another individual’s. Photography carries the quiet thrill of discovery—the joy of encountering the unforeseen. By recording what moves me and following chance wherever it leads, this project explores the subtle, mysterious phenomena that shimmer just beneath the surface of everyday life.

Yuka Takasu

Recipient of the inaugural Ruinart Japan Award (2021), a prize at Canon GRAPHGATE (2023), and the Special Jury Award at the 55th FUJIFILM Photo Contest, Takasu held a solo exhibition at KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival (2022) following an artist residency in France (2021).

Her practice blends traditional and contemporary printing techniques—from risograph and historical photographic processes to digital methods—exploring the “unanticipated within the anticipated.” Working with AI and other technologies, she investigates chance and probability in contemporary life. Current projects include papie pojagi and mille-pèlerille, with photobooks and zines presented internationally.
