STILL LIFE

SHORT LIST

Statement

Still life picture

This still life piece is not intended to function like a definitive, single tableau shot, but involves an overlapping, layered structure, with the subject of the work changing over time like a short film. It is studded with pictorial motifs, quotes, and parodies, and contains a range of personal stories on various objets d'art. This is a personal documentary where perspectives move, and interests change, build up, and collapse.

Profile

Takashi Mochizuki

Born in 1967 in Tokyo. In 2000, he had his solo exhibition "ACROSS THE ASIA" (4U). In 2015, he photographed the Nepalese earthquake and contributed his work to the "Sunday Mainichi". In 2019, he produced photographs based on the theme of still-life, which were presented in both "Still Plus Photo Exhibition" (Gallery 5610) and also "TAMAVIVANT II 2019" (Tama Art University Art Thek). Since 2015, he has been a part-time lecturer at Design Department of Tokyo University of the Arts.

Jury selection

Takashi Mochizuki tableaus are breath taking with their detailed collection of objects beautifully choreographed together. The resulting still lives are enigmatic, sensual and lush. Mochizuki's photos are a great reworking in the tradition of still lives in painting.
