PLANT LIFE
SHORT LIST
1′ [Honorable Mention]
My grandparents have passed away. I used to spend time with them until my parents returned from work. They both loved flowers and the fields.
In a high school class, I learned about the concept of zero. If life is considered as '1', then is death really '0'?
However, I remember their round, small backs tending to flowers. I still know the hands, muddy enough to hide wrinkles and veins.
I photograph flowers, and they inspire me to do so. As long as we influence each other through these images, death remains a “1’”.
HAYATA SATOMI
In my photography, I've found trust and anticipation, reflecting my stance and wishes.
Capturing subjects related to me, this work represents confronting my own mortality.
There were a few interesting entries to this award that had a connection to loved ones who had passed away and the seeds or plant life remaining that kept alive and existing after a person had left. Such a thought is often associated with a material item or maybe even a recipe. I like though this thought of a plant or tree that continues its life after the person who held it dear or planted it has passed. Another thing that still holds life and a bridge to the living. Thank you for sending this work, it was very thought provoking and moving to see.
