LIGHT
GRAND PRIX
Statement
Memory
It was like being in a dream.
A young man took me to spend a few days in nature outside the city. There were no TVs, computers, or large shopping centers offering everything I could want, but happiness could be found anywhere I looked.
I feel like there's more power in light when it's unblocked by high-rise buildings.
Glittering water, sunlight swaying happily as it's filtered through the trees... As I feel the ever-changing light with my entire body, I make sure I never forget that moment.

Jury selection
Perhaps because of the coronavirus, there were many wonderful submissions this time that were all composed by taking the time to reflect on their work. As a result, it was very difficult to make selections.
Still, Yamaguchi-san's work stood apart from the others, showing an unconstrained physicality like a drawing done in a single, uninterrupted stroke. The events that the photographer happened to experience in this place are incorporated smoothly into the medium through light. Each image seems to glow, resonating with the others. The relaxed writing in the text was good, too.
