Boy comfort zoom

The body of work focuses on capturing masculinity in its many forms and uniqueness. I often have the model picked somewhere familiar to them as an entry point to their world. The process of trust building — making them feel comfortable undressed in front of the camera — is how I building my relationship with the boys.

Yufeng Yan

Born in China,Yan Yufeng lived in Italy for eight years; he now lives and works in Shanghai. Working in the genre of portraiture, he produces images that document contemporary notions of masculinity. His long-term project “boy comfort zoom” features young men from Italy, China, Germany, and Japan, often posing in their bedrooms. Every shot captures a delicate exchange of trust, giving a zoom into the subject’s vulnerability and everyday comfort.

Jury selection

In a relatively familiar and private real space, Yan Yufeng's work breaks the barrier between the photographer and the photographed, and establishes the relationship between the photographer and the photographed, as well as the relationship between the lens and the body.
