THEME #46Winners2023AUG
PLANT LIFE
WINNERS LIST
THEME SUMMARY

Combining plants on roadsides with photographs to celebrating nature in cities, immersing his camera in a pond, using an infrared camera to capture the night animals in the forest, funnelling birds from the sky into a open fertile landscape – Our jury for this competition is Stephen Gill, an artist who has always worked closely with nature. “PLANT LIFE” is his theme of choice. The plants in cities, vegetables in the supermarket, greens in the house, or this term could even further extend to the exotic forests in a faraway country. “PLANT LIFE” not only touches on the generic definition of plants but also can refer to the life that springs off from such greenery like insects, birds, and animals; your personal life or collaborating with plants or human life alongside plant life; plants being pushed away or reclaiming space; food, environment or the joy and pleasure plants can offer. With such a broad understanding of the theme, why not try reflecting upon the holistic understanding of this theme using photography?
[Submission Period] from August 14 to October 16

JUDGE

Stephen Gill
(Photographer)
Stephen Gill (b. 1971, Bristol, UK, lives in Sweden) became interested in photography in his early childhood, thanks to his father and interest in insects and initial obsession with collecting bits of pond life to inspect under his microscope. His work encompasses both the everyday and moments of insight, illuminating the often too elusive aspects of the lives we lead.
Gill invites us into his microscopic worlds, through the labyrinthine underbelly of London’s railway bridges, and the dark undergrowth of a Swedish forest at nightfall. With each new obsession, we are drawn deeper within Gill’s own exploratory journey to share in his deep-rooted sense of curiosity.
