THEME #40Winners2022DEC
Sound and Voice
WINNERS LIST
THEME SUMMARY

RongRong & inri, the artist duo who are the judges this time, are not only active as artists, but also proactively discover, spread, and develop modern photographs through the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing and Xiamen), a modern art center that they direct. The theme of IMA Next put up by these two leaders of the Asian photography industry is "Sound and Voice." There are times when photographs that could never produce sound and voices call upon even your sense of hearing and leave a deep impression on you, aren't there? RongRong & inri think that photographs that elicit such phenomena convey "vibrations." In such a chaotic age, it is important to first be aware of the "vibrations" that one's own creations emit before conveying those "vibrations" outwards, and perhaps from there, the potential for new expression is found. Please try expressing invisible "vibrations" with your photographs.
[Submission Period] from December 16 to February 17
[Application fee] 2,000JPY per entry
JUDGE

RongRong&inri
(Photographer)
RongRong (China) and inri (Japan) have been working together since 2000. Their works reflect the intimate world that they have created together and push the boundaries of traditional black-and-white darkroom techniques. Their critically acclaimed series of works, such as Mt. Fuji (2001), Liulitun (1996-2003), and Tsumari Story (2012-2014), reflect their shared life and surroundings, delving into the rapidly changing world around them.
In 2007, RongRong&inri established the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in the Beijing Caochangdi Art District. In 2008, they launched the annual Three Shadows Photography Award (TSPA), a prize aimed at discovering and encouraging China’s most promising young photographers. In 2010, they started a collaboration with the Arles International Photography Festival (Les Rencontres d’Arles) and co- produced the Caochangdi Photo Spring Festival in Beijing for three years – from 2010 to 2012. They have continued this collaboration at Three Shadows’ Xiamen location, where since 2015 they have co-hosted the Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival.
RongRong&inri received the Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize at the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards, and the International Award at the 2022 Photography Society of Japan Awards, in recognition of both their careers as artists and their significant impact on Asian photography.
